There have been many studies carried out that show findings of the positive effects of humour on our mental health, and as a result, doctors and psychologists are beginning to implement laughter more and more as a form of treatment for their patients.
Health Benefits of Laughter
Laughter has numerous health benefits including boosting your immune system, minimising stress, as well as releasing endorphins (happy hormones).
It has well been documented that these happy hormones are a great boost to our short-term happiness; but can laughter help treat long-term depression?
Well, It may not be a cure, but yes, it can help prevent and treat depression.
Social Benefits of Laughter
There are also many social benefits of comedy such as defusing conflict, promoting teamwork and bonding. All of which are great for strengthening confidence and self-esteem.
Self-esteem and confidence can have a long-term positive effect on your mental wellness as well as physical health.
Turn to Laughter
Learn to use humour to defeat problems in your life by implementing more fun, games, and play. The effect creating laughter has on our mood is literally like flicking a switch in our brain. Just as surrounding ourselves with depressing things and people can have a negative effect on our emotions, surrounding ourselves with laughter creates a very positive reaction.
Laughter is Contagious
When we laugh and smile, our brain responds positively by releasing dopamine, and dopamine makes us respond by laughing and smiling when we are feeling happy.
This connection is not just limited to ourselves. It can spread from person to person. If you smile at someone chances are they will smile back, and maybe even go on to smile at the next person they meet. If you laugh at something, it encourages other people to laugh too.
With this in mind, let’s start spreading some joy and laughter in the world.
