Today, on the 9th of February, people all around the nation will set out in the search of their favourite Italian dish. Because today, folks, is National Pizza Day.
Pizza is one of the worlds most loved dishes. It’s quick, easy, delicious and you can put just about anything on it. In fact, pizza has been around since 1830 and on average Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second!
A Slice of History
The Neapolitan pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created the most well-known and first ever invented pizza, the ‘Margherita’ for the Queen consort of Italy (whose name was Margherita) in 1889. He used tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, to represent the national colours of the Italian flag!
Today though, there are over 100 types of pizza and the combination of toppings, crusts and bases are endless. It’s safe to say, Italian food has conquered the world.
